Dr. Liz B.
I own All Creatures Veterinary Hospital in Salem, which began in 1991 as a small veterinary house call practice, and evolved over the course of twelve years into a part of the family for over three thousand households throughout the North Shore. In 2003 I put down roots on the banks of the North River to provide a home for the practice and state of the art medical facility for our patients.
When I was a solo house call practitioner, I gave birth to my daughter. I took exactly 12 days off after her birth. I might have taken a little more time if paid leave had been in effect and covered a portion of my salary. The pets never stop getting sick so duty might have called anyway, but it would have provided a sense of security and support for my family. My daughter Becca saw a lot of animals from her baby carrier that winter.
I look forward to being able to provide a paid family and medical leave for my employees with Raise Up Massachusetts’ legislation. If each week I invest a few dollars for each employee and they match it out of their paycheck, we will ensure that everyone in Massachusetts has a safety net for family illness, adoption, or the birth of a child.
